Form Is Dead, Long Live Form

From Raymond Loewy to Jon Ives, there is a long tradition of product designers transforming businesses and brands by giving form to the objects that consumers lust after. While that tradition is not exactly dead, it no longer exists in a simple vacuum. The Industrial Age has bled into the Information Age and we can expect those two revolutions to run in tandem alongside each other for the foreseeable future. What does that mean to givers of form? A unified view of design is emerging that is enabling designers (all designers, really) to own a greater responsibility for creating value propositions, communicating value propositions and shaping the spaces to make, sell and use those value propositions. In giving form to objects, information and spaces, 21st century designers are improving the sex appeal of function—and are becoming even more integral to best practices for any business. Clive Roux, IDSA CEO and former design director at Philips, will explore this unified view of design and contemplate how the process of giving form is changing for all designers.
