Record unemployment, high poverty, soaring childhood obesity, and an HIV/AIDS epidemic. These may be characteristics that you would expect to hear of any urban city throughout the world, but is it what you would expect of neighborhoods in our nation’s capital? For most people, “Washington, DC” brings to mind historic landmarks and national treasures. For the people that live in some of Washington, DC’s neighborhoods, however, the picture is quite different. Darius’ talk will focus on some of these social problems the District is facing, the innovative methods that other cities and countries are using to address similar problems, and how DC might look in the future if we adopt some of these innovative strategies right in our own community.

Darius is an attorney at a law firm in Washington, DC and is the co-founder of the DC Social Innovation Project, which invests in creative new ideas by young people to address pressing social issues in DC. He is the author of Being the Difference: True Stories of Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things To Change the World and currently serves as a commissioner of Serve DC.
