Ignite DC #7

Shannon Mouton

Marriage...HUH...what is it good for?

The statistics are irrefutable and the anecdotes are plentiful. Is this a dream? No, it's more like a nightmare. The cold, hard and painful reality is crystal clear, I may never get married, and I'm not alone.

We did it right. We went to school, got educated, began our careers and where the hell is my Prince Charming? How much longer do I have to wait? Why is there a cloud hovering over my lovelife...or is it?

Do we -- the single, well educated, never-been-married, property owning, childless, successful, world traveled, living la vida loca women -- need to get married?

If marriage is to facilitate procreation in an orderly and systematic fashion, and my sisters and I aren't procreating anything, then why should we get married?

If marriage is for friendship and companionship, and my sisters and I have each other, a couple of cats and some tweeps, then why should we get married?

If marriage is for financial stability and to have a man take care of us, and my sisters and I have secured our own futures and take care of each other, then why should we get married?

If 50 percent of first marriages end in divorce, then why should we get married at this point in the game?

What's the point of it at this stage in our lives? Why do so many of us still want to get married?

About Shannon Mouton:

Shannon Mouton is a single, never-been-married, no-child-having 42 year old woman living in northeast DC. She's been engaged three times and each time she backed out because of the onset of stupidity by her fiances. Her real life experiences have provided her with wisdom beyond her years when it comes to relationships and marriage.

When she isn't having fun with her single sisters, you can find Shannon tweeting, ballroom dancing (not while tweeting though), writing or attending a lecture, event or happening in the greatest city on earth (and I mean DC if you didn't get it).
