Innovation Improbable the Unusual Suspects
Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms, this presentation will take you through a diverse selection of innovative ideas, from the past to the future. The Innovations presented here range from changing the lives of little known individuals all the way to impacting the lives of millions. It will include the innovation that saved my life and perhaps the life of a family member when the creative idea was considered a life threatening risk. Included will be ideas that changed the world as we see it today, including areas in both tech and social media. Some ideas were created in the minds of people that include artists, pianists, actors & geeks. Creative ideas and experiments that have changed our lives can come from those with big ideas or those that are just fulfilling a personal need. We will never know where the next idea will come from but this presentation will remind us that it could be any one of us in this room right now… even sometimes from the least likely or expected source. We must always keep our minds open enough to identify it even when it can seem unlikely, and yes it could possibly save a life (maybe yours).
About Shireen Mitchell:
Shireen Mitchell is an expert at merging diversity to create innovation as a digital media specialist. She is founder of the D.C.-based tech non-profit Digital Sistas which focuses on using digital media and technology for women and diverse communities. As a self-proclaimed “geekette,” she founded the first women of color web management firms in the early 90's, which managed PoliticallyBlack.com prior to it's sale and incorporation into what's known today as Politico.com. In addition she created a digital media game that helped youth learn technology and programming through healthy competition at the local Techno Rodeos.
As an author she has written “Gaining Daily Access to Science and Technology” in the book 50 Ways to Improve Women's Lives. Shireen has been honored with several awards including Top 25 Women in Tech to Watch, Top 100 DC Tech Titans, Social Citizen Award: Apps for Democracy DC, Rising Star: Woman of Color in Technology, Heroine in Technology, Community Technology Leader, and one of The Root 100, to name a few.
